Wubi – Ubuntu Installer for Windows

As a lover of Linux the release of the new Ubuntu I to was eager to download and install this OS. However I have two problems currently. My laptop has a dead CD-Rom which sucks butt as the laptop is only 9 months old; and my desktop well is sadly running Windows XP Pro and I can’t really format it just yet. However heck lets install on the desktop it says it will auto partition it right?

Exploring the Ubuntu website I found this new program called Wubi:

Wubi

Quoted from there site.

Wubi is an officially supported Ubuntu installer for Windows users that can bring you to the Linux world with a single click. Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other Windows application, in a simple and safe way. Are you curious about Linux and Ubuntu? Trying them out has never been easier!

Download Wubi Now

Because of the above stated problems, this looks like the perfect solution to my problems. I crabbed the file took a minute and the install started. Let me tell you it was painless. This is really a simple install. After downloading the file, launch it.

Pretty much select a few simple options, Location of the install, Language, What version of Ubuntu you want and a username.
Click Install and your on your way.

A few minutes goes by, all this is downloaded from the net, so a net connection must be established.

Wubi

Ok were all done, lets reboot this.

I want to apologize in advance, I was not prepared so all I had was my cell phone. I was met by the normal Linux Boot Screen.

Then the start of the install screens.

Next thing I did was to start exploring, looks like it found everything, my NIC, Video Card, Printer, External HD, DVD Burner, Sound all if it. So lets fire up a Divx,

As you can see it saw that it needed a codex, looked and found one.

Now very interestingly, I went to capture the divx playing, and it wouldn’t it would only grab the player without the video playing. Odd but at this time not a huge issue at least for me.

Needless to say I am impressed, and it worked. I reboot back into Windows and XP just did a um ok you reboot. I am not going to uninstall this anytime soon, this is great, a nice way to get the Windows community to look at the Linux community. Please post your comments !
